MARIA SIBYLLA MERIAN
DECE 8 - JANU 13, 2019
Curated by Jesse Morgan Barnett, Mason Bryant and Hector Ramirez, Tirl presents the work of Maria Sibylla Merian as the foundation for the second exhibition at Closed--Languages.
As a naturalist and illustrator, Merian’s detailed studies of insect development helped solidify the rejection of the theory of spontaneous generation in the 18th century.
This exhibition addresses the posthumous inclusion of 12 additional plates to Merian’s self-published book Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium.
